What is Ayurveda

Ayurveda is translated as “knowledge of life” and encompasses the idea of how to live wisely. In particular, it is the knowledge of how to live according to your individual constitution, and at its root is its focus on the uniqueness of each individual. Ayurveda teaches us how to embrace what our constitution is by observing who we are and how we feel based in nature. As you learn about your individual constitution, you can live a truly authentic life that allows your health to flourish.

Ayurveda divides our body, skin, and mind into 3 main constitutions, known as the Doshas – Vata, Pitta, Kapha.  Neither one is better than the other, they are simply different by design and all perfect in their own right. What governs your individual constitution are the 5 elements and their qualities: space, air, fire, water, and earth.  Everyone has them in a unique proportion that determines our individual features, including our skin type, and our inherent mental and physical tendencies.

Ayurveda describes beauty as the balance of vastness like space, lightness like air, brilliance like fire, continuous flowing like water, and nourishing firmness like earth. The secret of beauty is to live in harmony with nature’s design for us as expressed by the personal mix of elements in your constitution. Vata produces dry skin, Pitta produces sensitive skin, and Kapha produces oily skin – these qualities refer to the natural tendency of the skin, and all skin types look radiant when the doshas are in balance. When the doshas are not balanced, the characteristic effect of each skin type tends to become more pronounced and may develop skin issues. Ayurveda prescribes that to correct an imbalance within any of the doshas, the opposite qualities of that dosha need to apply.
